FAQs About Wine

The nectar of the gods - at least, that’s how we feel about it! Vino is a beverage that has been consumed for thousands of years. It’s been enjoyed by paupers and princes alike, and yet, there are certainly some questions that surround it. We’ve done a little digging to find some of the most frequently asked questions about wine. There are some pretty crazy ones out there, and then a few that make TOTAL sense! Check out the answers to your wine questions, and don’t forget to ask your own!

Why Is Wine Better Than Beer?

We may be a bit biased to answer this question … However, we’re going to rely on an unbiased higher power (Google) to give us the answer to this question. Unfortunately, the answers aren’t very cut and dry. Some answer whether a beer is more fattening than wine, other ask which is stronger, and some ask how many beers are equivalent to a glass of wine. Basically, the common question behind “which is better” is really, which is healthier. The true consensus is that if you are drinking responsibly, and choosing options that have fewer calories than their counterpart, you can really enjoy whichever beverage suits you most. You’re also in luck - at the Lake of the Ozarks best Winery, we also serve some delicious brews. Something for everyone here!

What Does It Mean When a Wine Has “Legs”?

Did you know that your wine has legs? This doesn’t mean that is will just walk off and leave you, but it can help indicate the alcohol level in your wine! Legs or ‘tears’ will fall at different speeds depending on the alcohol content in your favorite wine. If the ‘legs’ are thicker or slower, it generally indicates a higher alcohol content.

What Wine is Used for Mulled Wine?

When you “mull” a wine, it disguises a lot of the nuances of the taste. You won’t want to pick something delicate because of that. Choose something that is bigger, bolder, and full-bodied. Red wines are the most popular, so if you’re looking for the next Lake of the Ozarks wine to feature in your Mulled Wine recipe, try our Norton! It’s got a deep plum color, along with full-bodied notes of tobacco and oak with a spicy smooth finish.

Which Wine Has The Least Calories?

If you’re looking for a wine with fewer calories, you’ll be better off sticking with whites. White wine tends to have a lower alcohol content than reds do, which in turn can mean fewer calories. With anything, moderation is key so too much of anything will build up in calories. Need a tasty white to try? How about our Vignoles with its mid-straw color and olive green tone! Or maybe our Spring Fling with the light bodied and fruity flavors.

Can Wine Freeze?

The short answer is yes! The longer version of the answer is yes, but … do not freeze your bottle of wine. Alcohol’s freezing point is lower than water, but the water content will begin to freeze, and when it does, it will begin to expand. This can put a lot of pressure on the cork (which could get pushed out) and on the bottle (which could crack). In short, if you want to freeze your wine, put it in ice cube trays first - do NOT freeze your wine bottles!

What Wine Goes With Steak?

If you want to pair your steak with an excellent wine, you won’t go wrong with a luxurious red. From our Syrah to our Seven’s Red Heaven, a glass of these wines would pair wonderfully with your next delicious steak.

Your Wine Connection at the Lake

If you’re looking for a fantastic hangout at the Lake of the Ozarks, Seven Springs Winery is the ideal hole in the wall spot at the Lake of the Ozarks. While it’s well known and loved by many tourists and locals alike, it still keeps the same old wonderful feel of a comfortable atmosphere where you can go to relax. Drink ALL the Wine!

As if we really need an excuse to drink wine, February 18th is Drink Wine Day! It's time to pull out the glasses, chill the bottle and prepare your best speech because this is a day worth toasting to. Of course, if you want to enjoy the best wine at the Lake of the Ozarks, you should definitely come out to Seven Springs Winery to enjoy the day with. We have all of the varieties you love, from red to white, sparkling to dry, and even a special blend. Here are a few fun facts about your favorite vino to get you ready for Sunday!

Drink Red Wine

Did you know that drinking red wine in appropriate doses is better for you than not drinking any at all?? This doesn't actually surprise us, but several human trial studies have shown that moderate red wine consumption is better than none at all. The reason why is because the antioxidants found in red wine can lower incidences of cardiovascular disease, mortality, and type-2 diabetes.

Are All Red Wines the Same?

Well ... there are some red wines that are better for you, amazingly. Mainly because some have higher levels of "good for you stuff" than others. Dry reds seem to be better than the sweet wines, and the wines with lower alcohol content are a little better than the ones with higher percentages. Red wines with higher tannins are better than low tannin wines, too!

How Much Wine Can You Drink?

According to the Wine Institute, Vatican City drinks the most wine per capita at 74 liters of wine per person per year! That's a full two times MORE WINE per capita than Italy!

What Makes Wine Red or White?

For what it's worth, red grapes and white grapes produce the same colored juice - it's just clear! However, the grape's skin is what makes red wine it's red color, versus white grapes making white wine. Red grape skins have several thousand times the anthocyanin pigments, which then turn the wine red in production.

Did You Know?

A “cork-tease” is someone who constantly talks about the wine he or she will open but never does.

Oh to Taste the Earth

In the Middle Ages, the greatest and most innovative winemakers of the day were monastic orders. The Cistercians and Benedictines were particularly apt winemakers, and they are said to have actually tasted the earth to discover how the soil changed from place to place.

A chilled glass of wine is one of the most incredible experiences. Especially when you combine that with enjoying a nice appetizer tray, a relaxing atmosphere, good friend, and live music. We have live music happening every Saturday through February, and as we get closer to spring, the patio will be the best place to relax and enjoy a nice day. There's only one way to really enjoy wine at the Lake of the Ozarks for Drink Wine Day, and that's at the Lake's original winery!

Your Favorite Pie with Your Favorite Wine!

If there’s one thing we’re thankful for this season, it’s a good Missouri wine - or any wine for that matter! At Seven Springs Winery, we are also grateful for some of the best customers that anyone could hope for. We love seeing you out here every weekend, drinking our Lake of the Ozarks wine, laughing with friends, and making incredible memories. Of course, this year, you may be enjoying time with family, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t still thinking about us! While enjoying your Thanksgiving pie, keep these wine pairings from Seven Springs Winery in mind! You’re going to love them.

Pumpkin Pie & Spring Fling

If you want to choose a wine that matches the holiday spices, we highly suggest the light bodied and fruity flavors of our Spring Fling. This white wine will be perfect for your holiday dessert.

Blueberry Pie & Blushing Springs

The flavors in our sparkling red wine are both rich and smooth, making it a delightful pair with blueberry pie. The sweet berry aromas also pair well, and the semi-sweet finish is splendid with the sweetness of the pie.

Sweet Potato Pie & Traminette

You’ll want to choose a wine that adds the perfect notes to this pie, the rich and hearty spices will pair wonderfully with our traminette. It is a light bodied wine, with a fruity, yet off-dry finish.

Apple Pie & Chardonel

Our rich chardonel pairs well with the apple flavors from the pie and the butter flavors in the crust. It has a medium body, with undertones that are fruity with notes of toasted oak - a wonderful pair for this classic pie.

Peanut Butter Pie & Syrah

Peanut butter pie is a delightful classic, but it’s also sweet, rich, and has notes of chocolate in the crust. Because of that, you'll want a wine that can hold it’s own with this type of pie. We think that our Syrah would be ideal. The aromas of currant, blackberry, and black pepper complement the richness of the peanut butter, and the subtle vanilla oak finish is superb.

Chocolate Cream Pie & Norton

Chocolate cream pie is also another rich pie, but absolutely decadent. Pair it with our Norton wine for a beautiful combination of tobacco, oak, and a spicy smooth persistent finish with the smooth chocolatey flavors of the pie.

Lemon Meringue Pie & Vignoles

Do you enjoy the fresh lemony citrus flavors of the lemon meringue pie? Well, you’ll love them with the flavorful bodies, peach, melon & citrus flavors in our Vignoles wine.

Key Lime Pie & Muscato Sparkling

Key lime is a special pie, so it needs a special wine. We think that our Muscato Sparkling would pair wonderfully with the key lime. The sparkling finish and the tropical fruit & flowers will make you think you’re on a sandy beach!

Pear Pie & Dry Vignoles

Pears are a notoriously sweet fruit so the flavors in our Dry Vignoles will pair well to help balance out the sweetness. This wine is flavorful bodies, with hints of peach, melon, and citrus.

Pecan Pie & Seven’s Red Heaven

Oh, what a classic, pecan pie is liable to be on every table around the nation - but we would love to see it served up with our Seven’s Red Heaven for the perfect pair! This wine boasts of a beautiful, deep plum color, along with refreshing, crisp, fruit flavors and a distant sweet finish - perfect for a sweet pie!

Cherry Pie & Spring Red

Cherry pie is another all American classic, so we think it would be served well with our semi-sweet red wine. It has a hint of black cherry and a wonderful velvet finish. Sounds like a cherry pie dream, doesn’t it?

Happy Thanksgiving!

From all of us at Seven Springs Winery, we hope that you have a wonderful holiday with your friends and family. No matter how you celebrate, whether it’s with a huge group of people or just a few close friends, may you be able to open a bottle of your favorite Missouri wine, and celebrate. Once the holiday is over, you may need a break from all of the holiday spirit - and we provide the perfect respite! Come out and see us!

Hauntingly Delicious Hallo-WINE and Candy Pairings

While most think that this season is for the kids - we all know who really benefits every Halloween. The parents who chauffeur their kids from one trick or treat event to another need to get paid their dues - and we prefer Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, thank you very much! If you’ll be charging a “driving tax”, a “costume design tax”, or “you live in my house tax” here are a few wine pairings to keep in mind for your next candy binge!

Candy Corn + Chardonel

This Halloween favorite will probably be gracing your trick or treat basket a few times this year, so why not make it a grown up treat by pairing it up with the best wine at the Lake of the Ozarks? Our Charnel is a light to medium straw colored wine with medium body. The fruity flavors will pair well with the Candy Corn, and the toasted oak will cut through the sweetness.

Reese’s

When you combine chocolate and peanut butter, you have an interesting and delicious flavor combination on your hands! How do you know what to pair with it? Should you pair up the chocolate with a red, or blend the peanut butter with a white? Well, you can always have a little bit of both! Or you can enjoy a glass of our delicious chardonel!

Twizzlers + Blushing Springs

These delicious red ropes need a special wine to really bring out their flavor! Better yet, bite off both ends and use your Twizzler as a straw when drinking a glass of our Blushing Springs sparkling red wine. The sweet berry aromas and the semi-sweet finish are perfection for your next Twizzler binge!

Snickers + Muscato Sparkling

Ahhh, Snickers. They are perfect when you’re hangry, and even better when you want to enjoy a fancy glass of our Muscato Sparkling. The brilliant, light straw and tropical fruit flavors pair well with the nutty and chocolatey candy. Plus the sparkling finish is a great way to end the whole thing.

Kit Kat + Norton

If you need someone to break you off a piece of that KitKat bar - you probably need them to pour you a glass of that Norton as well! Our delicious red wine has an opaque, deep club color, with hearty flavors of tobacco and oak. They pair well with the crisp Kit Kat, and the spicy smooth persistent finish of this full-bodied wine makes them a perfect blend.

Gummy Bears + Muscato Sparkling

Let’s be honest, the BEST way to enjoy this Halloween snack is by infusing your gummy bears in our Muscato Sparkling wine! Just fill a glass with gummy bears and pour the wine over top. You can let them sit for a bit to enhance the flavor, and then enjoy!

Skittles + Vignoles

What if you could taste the rainbow AND take the Vignoles?? We’re thinking that sounds like a delicious compromise. Our white wine boasts a mid-straw color with olive green tones. But the real magic happens with the full-bodied peach, melon, and citrus flavors come out!

Twix + Syrah

Chocolate, caramel, and nougat - they need something special when you are choosing the best wine to pair with your Twix. We think a chilled glass of our Syrah would be divine. Aromas of currant, blackberry, black pepper, and a subtle vanilla oak finish are the perfect way to enjoy adulthood and childhood together.

M & M’s + Spring Red

These colorful chocolate candies are a household name, as should our Spring red be as well! Pair up these little morsels of goodness with our semi-sweet red. The hit of black cherry and the velvet finish are perfect for pairing with chocolate.

Grown Up Halloween

What if we all got dressed up, took our Halloween baskets, and instead of getting candy, we got wine?? Doesn’t sound like a bad holiday idea if you ask us ;). Of course, the next best thing is enjoying your favorite candy with your favorite wine and calling it a day. Come out to Seven Springs Winery to get stocked up on all of your favorites before the candy is gone! Happy Halloween from the Seven Springs Winery.

The annual Doe Camp event is coming to the winery near you, so grab your girlfriends and get ready to drink some wine and shop until you drop. This is a great time to start working on Christmas presents for family and friends. What a fun way to enjoy both the beautiful weather and our delicious Missouri Wine. Our trails are not paved, so please wear appropriate walking shoes for your winery adventure.

Smooth Tunes

Summer may be over, but Sax on the Beach is NOT! We love having them at the winery, but they'll only be here for a short time. Sax on the Beach will be playing for your musical pleasure every Saturday and Sunday afternoon through the end of the month. There are only a few weekends left to enjoy the musical talent of Bill and Hayley as they serenade you on the winery patio. Come out and see them, enjoy a bite to eat, and relax on a beautiful fall afternoon. Our full-service kitchen will be serving appetizers, lunch, and dinner - and of course, we have lots of wine!
