Celebrating Father's Day in Style

Father's Day is on June 17th this year, and it's right around the corner! Have you figured out how you'll commemorate Dad and everything he's done for you? We have a few great ideas, and unsurprisingly they surround the best wine at the Lake of the Ozarks. This year we're hosting an All You Can Eat Shrimp Buffet to help make celebrating dad easy! If you'll be at the Lake of the Ozarks for Father's Day, here are all of the details to make for a fun day, plus a few fun facts about how the holiday got started to begin with.

Celebrate Father's Day with All You Can Eat Shrimp!

Summer afternoons call for great food, ice cold drinks, live music, and fun games. Father's Day calls for all of that and then some! We've got a great lineup of food and live music to keep the day rolling, and make for an easy way for YOU to celebrate the dad in your life. Join us on June 17th from 11 AM to 5 PM for an all you can eat shrimp buffet, complete with a salad, baby new potatoes, breadsticks, and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. You have to make your reservations, though, so visit our website or click HERE to make online reservations. The seats are limited, and we don't want you to miss out. You can also give us a call at 573-317-0100 to make your reservations.

This delicious buffet will be served from 11 AM to 5 PM and costs $15.99 per person. PLUS, if you purchase two meals, you get a FREE carafe of Sangria. Let's make it all about Dad and bring him for a very special afternoon.

Live Music & Games!

Don't think we've forgotten about the entertainment! We've got great live music from the Adam & Steve Duo playing from 1-4 PM. They will be bringing a great atmosphere to the event, and we can't wait for you to hear them play.

In addition to the fun live music, we'll also have games of cornhole to play on the patio. It should come as no surprise, but we'll also be serving up your favorite wine or craft beer, too. No matter what dad loves to drink, we've got it on tap or in the bottle.

Fun Facts About Father's Day

Father's Day hasn't been around nearly as long as Mother's Day. That doesn't change the fact that we love our dad's and are glad to have a day to celebrate them. Here are a few facts about the day and how it all got started.

The Very First Father's Day

The first Father's Day was unofficially celebrated on July 5th, 1908 when a West Virginia church hosted an event that explicitly honored father's. During the Sunday sermon, 362 men who had died in coal mine explosions were honors in a one-time commemoration.

The Start of the Tradition

One year after the celebration of dad's, Sonora Smart Dodd, who was one of six children raised by a widower, got the ball rolling for celebrating Father's Day. She did have some success when Washington State held the first statewide Father's Day on July 19, 1910.

It Took 60 Years

The road to getting Father's Day secured as a national holiday was a long one. It actually took sixty years to get the concept established. President Woodrow Wilson tried to start it, and finally Lyndon B.  Johnson declared that the third Sunday in June would be Father's Day - even though it was not made a permanent national holiday. Nixon was the president who officially declared it a holiday in 1972.

We Love Dad's

At Seven Springs Winery, we celebrate our owner and founder, Mike Bleile who is not only a dad, but whose sons work for the winery as well. There's no better excuse to get out and enjoy the Lake of the Ozarks best winery for a summer afternoon than to celebrate Father's Day. There's still plenty of time to make your plans, so give dad and a call and invite him to join you for lunch on June 17th.  We'd love to see you out here.

25 Words Every Wino Should Know

Whether you need to know some wine terms to impress your boss or you just want to know them for further enlightenment, there's nothing wrong with having a few good wine words under your belt. From complex words that describe the making of wine to words that describe the taste of wine - there are many words that can be used. At Seven Springs Winery, we have plenty of varieties of wine for you to choose from, so if you're looking for somewhere to practice these 25 words, we know exactly where you should go!

Wine Bottle Lingo

Appellation
This will tell you where the grapes for the wine was grown.

Blend
If a winery takes two different grapes and makes one wine from them - this is a blend. At Seven Springs Winery, we have a blend called Left Side. It's a 2001 Vintage Norton blended with a 2008 fortified Norton.

Importer
This would be in reference to the person who brought the wine from another location. One thing to keep in mind is that they tend to have a specific taste, so if you like one wine from an importer, you may also like others.

Sulfites
This is a natural bi-product of wine fermentation. You will also not find more sulfites in red wine or white.

Varietal
While a variety might imply that there are several types of grapes, a varietal says that a wine is only made up of at least 75% of one grape.

Vintage
This only references the year that the grapes were grown and harvested - not necessarily the year the wine was produced and bottled.

Vintner
This is what the proprietor of a winery is called!

Wine Descriptor Lingo

Acid or Acidity
All grapes will contain some level of acid - thankfully because the acid is what preserves the wine. If a wine has a higher acidity level, it's generally a crisper wine.

Aroma
The aroma is something you will decide when you sniff the wine in your glass before taking a sip.

Balance
All of the elements that make up the flavor of the wine are combined together and called the balance. Those elements are alcohol, acidity, fruitiness, sweetness, and tannins.

Body
This doesn't actually refer to the quality of the wine, but the weight it holds in your mouth while you're drinking it.

Bouquet
A bouquet is a fragrance that is developed after the wine has been fermented and bottled. The bouquet of a wine can take years to develop.

Complex
Complexity can often be considered a good thing, and just as you love a complex story plot, there's something mysterious about a complex wine. The flavor, the tastes, and the very subtle nuances that you notice when you drink are what make a wine complex.

Finish

While this could be called the "aftertaste," phrasing it as the "finish" sounds much classier, don't you think?

Length
How long does the finish last in your mouth? This is what the length is describing, and it can be short or long, quick or lingering.

Mature
This describes a wine that is ready to drink. It has been aged appropriately and is ready to be enjoyed - now!

Texture
This is yet another word to describe the feeling you get when you let a good Missouri wine sit in your mouth. Full-bodied wines tend to have more texture, and as you try many different wines, you will find the texture you like.

Young
A young wine has generally been bottled and sold within a year. This is exactly how it's meant to be, and it's not generally as enjoyable if it's "aged."

Other Wine Lingo

Aeration or Breathing
When you let a wine "breathe" you are merely letting it sit out for a short while before drinking it. This can be done one glass at a time, or a whole bottle a time in a decanter.

Aging
Some wine is meant to be aged, while other wines are meant to be served while they are still young. If you have any doubts, you can ask the "vintner" when you visit our Lake of the Ozarks winery!

Case
In the United States, a case of wine is generally twelve 750 ml bottles.

Corked
Uncorked is good, corked is not good. When a wine is corked, it generally means that the cork, and thusly the wine, has been tainted. This can happen sometimes be caused by bad environments like a moldy basement.

Oxidation
An oxidized wine is one that has been left out in the air for too long. It can affect the color and the taste of the wine.

Sediment
Older wines with more tannins tend to have a sediment that either settles at the bottom or side of the bottle depending on how it was stored. You will generally find this in darker red wines because they have more tannins and color pigments to settle.

Tannins
Tannins are a natural ingredient from the skin of a grape. The higher the tannins, the drier the wine tends to be.

The Best Wine at the Lake of the Ozarks

No matter how many wine words you have stocked in your mental dictionary, we are certain that you can enjoy our wine with or without them. Beat the Heat at Your Summer Wedding

June weddings have always had a special romantic sound to them. Of course, when the average heat index is over 100° your teary eyed look may not actually be tears on your wedding day. Since you're not actually going to change your wedding date just because it's hot, we have a few ideas to help you beat the heat! At Seven Springs Winery we have several beautiful venues for you to get married in, and should you choose the gazebo outside, we have ideas to help cool everything off a bit.

Be a FAN of your Wedding Program

This is a beautiful idea when you want to make your wedding functional and beautiful. All of the details about your wedding and wedding party can be laid out on a function open and close fan. This is a great way to provide your guests with something they can use during the wedding to cool off, and after they stick it in their purse to go home, they may just never take it out!

Pop the Cork and Eat a Popsicle

This is one of the best ideas we've seen yet! Put fruit popsicles into a wine glass and then pour your favorite, chilled, Seven Springs vino over the popsicles. It will make a refreshing, cool beverage, especially as the popsicle starts to melt in the wine.

Keep Your Guests Cool

When they first arrive at your wedding, have your guest book attendant offer them a cool drink that reminds them how refreshing your love is. Not only will this keep them cool, but hydrated, which is extremely important when it starts to get this hot outdoors. You can hand out bottles of chilled water, or you can go a step further and provide something that has electrolytes in it to keep them hydrated.

No Need to Search for This Fan

This program has a slightly different spin on it because not only is it a fan, but it is also entertainment for your guests as they are waiting for the wedding or reception to start. You can generate word searches online, or I'm sure you can outsource this project. Choose words that are specific to your special day, like names of your wedding party, special foods you ate on your first date, the location of your honeymoon, and more!

Make Hydration Accessible

No matter what, if your wedding is steamy, make it easy for your guests to find hydration. You can keep water stations scattered around the ceremony and reception area. Opt for something cool and refreshing. You need to have lots of water, but you can make it fancy by adding cucumbers and pieces of fruit.

Outdoor Wedding Venue at the Lake of the Ozarks

We know how important your wedding is to you, and that's why we make you and your guests a priority at our venue. Whether you find that the sun is scorching, or the winter day turns snowy, we're prepared to help you no matter the weather. If you're still looking for the perfect place to get married at the Lake of the Ozarks, look no further. We offer a gazebo and a banquet hall (that has air conditioning of course!), and both will be beautiful for your big day. Visit our website today to learn more about our wedding packages and how we can make your special day even better!
