5 Reasons to Enjoy a Glass of Wine

If you feel like you've been laboring all summer long, and you just need a break - we know just want you need. A weekend spent at Seven Springs Winery is a great way to kick back, relax, and not only enjoy time with friends, but time sipping your favorite Missouri wine. If you need a few reasons why you should "labor" over a wine bottle this weekend - we have a few!

Wine Can Improve Your ...

Brain

Studies have been done to show that people who drink a glass of wine a day scored better on memory quizzes than individuals who did not. Wine has been shown to reduce blood clots as well as reduce blood vessel inflammation. This, in turn, can improve cognitive decline and heart disease!

Weight

Studies have shown that people who drink a glass of wine per day are also more likely to have smaller waists and less body fat! If that isn't a reason to drink more wine then we don't know what is! There are also studies that say your body is still burning calories for even up to ninety minutes after you drink a glass of wine.

Bones

They may say you should drink a glass of milk every day for your bones, but what they aren't telling you, is that wine can also help your bones. In fact, individuals who drink wine are known to have a higher bone mass than those who abstain.

Immune System

As we're getting ready for the fall and winter season, we're sure you would love to find an easy way to boost your immune system. There was a study done in Britain that showed an 11% decrease in susceptibility to infection when they drank a glass of wine a day.

Blood Sugar

The reasons are unclear, but there are examples that show drinking wine can help improve your insulin resistance - especially in diabetic patients. Studies also show that women who drink one or two glasses of wine are 40% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Relax With Your Favorite Glass

These are just a few reasons you should never feel guilty about drinking wine, especially after the busy summer that you've had. Come out to Seven Springs Winery this weekend and enjoy a bottle of your favorite Lake of the Ozarks wine, kick back and enjoy our new landscaping, and even enjoy some music on the patio. Our Lake of the Ozarks venue is perfect for enjoying a nice holiday weekend. We can't wait to see you!

4 Tips For Creating a Memorable Toast

Do you ever have that sinking moment where someone asks you if you can say a toast at their event? Your mind starts racing, and you aren't sure what to say. How do some people come up with those witty, incredible posts on the fly? Even with preparation toasts can be challenging, whether it's for a wedding, company party, birthday party, anniversary or more. At Seven Springs Winery, toasts are a part of daily life. It's natural to pop the cork and make a toast, so we have a few hints for you to help make it easier.

W.I.N.E.S

Witty, inspirational, nice, encouraging, and filled with stories. These are a few words that come to mind when we think of toasts - and wine for that matter! No matter what the occasion, there are a few key ways you can make a toast endearing and beautiful, and these words will help you to remember on the fly or during preparation for your next toast.

Witty

If you have a witty personality, it can come easily, but if you don't - this may sound intimidating. Just take a deep breath and start off with something witty. Be yourself, and even if you get off to an awkward start - you can always recover in with a witty statement or something clever or funny.

Inspirational

Most likely, you've been asked to give a toast about someone or someones. Whether it's a wedding, graduation, party, or even a funeral. By keeping a toast upbeat and inspirational, you can't go wrong. Do you have something inspiring that the person you're describing has said? This is the perfect time to use it. You can also include an inspriational quote, and then tie it back into how the person exemplified it. Here's an example:

"Charles Swindoll once said, "life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it." When he said this, he had to have been talking about *insert name* because they have always had a positive attitude. In fact, that's what has always inspired me about them. I remember this one time ..."

Nice

When making a toast, there is a fine line to tread between funny and cruel. If you're making a toast about someone, it's most likely a big day for them. There will be people from all areas of their life, including parents, teachers, kids, and others. While embarrassing them may feel good in the moment, it generally doesn't feel good later, and there is no need to share about *that one* night in front of the many people who respect them.

Encouraging

Your toast is a wonderful opportunity to encourage the person that you're speaking about. Maybe this milestone they've achieved has been hard, filled with rough patches, and a stretch to their emotional limits. Maybe it's been easy, fun, and a wonderful event to check off their list - either way, this is your chance to encourage their efforts in this new season!

Stories

Finally, use LOTS of stories! This is what makes a toast so much fun. Funny stories, stories of personal growth, the stories filled with the crazy adventures you experienced with this person. Witty stories, inspirational stories, nice stories, and encouraging stories. These are what make a toast memorable. The ability to remind everyone why they love the individual in the spotlight is a powerful one - use it wisely.

White Strawberry-Lemon Sangria

Recipe Credit: www.KitchenTreaty.com

Strawberries, lemon, apples, white wine, and rum make a perfect summer sangria that'll knock your socks off.

INGREDIENTS:2 lemons, thinly sliced
1 apple, cored and sliced (any kind)
1 cup strawberries, hulled and sliced lengthwise
1 (750 ml) bottle Seve Springs Winery's white wine (like Chardonel)
1/2 cup light rum
4 cups lemon-lime soda

DIRECTIONS:Add lemon slices to a large pitcher, then the apples and strawberries.
Pour the wine and rum over the top.
Cover and place in the refrigerator for 4 - 5 hours.
Remove from refrigerator and add the lemon lime soda. Add a few pieces of the fruit to your glass and pour sangria over to serve.
Leftovers keep for a day or so, but you likely won't have any!

Red Wine Ice Cream

INGREDIENTS1 bottle of Seven Spring's red wine (like Spring Red)
2/3 cup brown sugar
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 cup half & half
4 egg yolks
1 vanilla bean

DIRECTIONSThe first step in making our wine ice cream is to reduce the wine down to a syrupy liquid. Pour your bottle of red wine into a large pot and simmer over low-medium heat until it is reduced to one cup of liquid. This took about an hour for me, but it could be sooner, so you should keep an eye on yours. Once it has been reduced, set aside. In a medium pot, whisk together the brown sugar, and whipping cream. Cut your vanilla bean in half and scrape out that beautiful vanilla caviar into the pot. Add the bean pod to the pot as well. Stir constantly while cooking over medium heat until it begins to steam, but before it boils. Beat your egg yolks with a fork or with a mixer until they are light colored. Remove the vanilla bean pod from the cream and slowly add the cream into the egg yolks. It is important to add the cream to the eggs very slowly so that they do not curdle. Once you have successfully added the cream to the eggs, pour the mixture back into the pot and cook over medium heat until it thickens and turns into a custard. If it sticks to the back of a wooden spoon, it is done. Remove from it from heat. Pour the mixture through a strainer and into a large bowl. Stir in the half and half and the reduced wine. Chill the mixture in the fridge for an hour or two until cold. Add to your ice cream maker and freeze according to directions. (For me this is about 30 minutes). If it is too soft for your liking, stick in the freezer for a few more hours. Then sit back and serve yourself a glass of Red Wine Ice Cream alongside a glass of red wine!

Recipe Credit: www.DessertForTwo.com

INGREDIENTS
2 cups cold fruity white wine (like our Spring Fling)
2-3 medium peaches, blanched, peeled, frozen, and sliced (or half a bag of frozen peaches)
sliced peaches for serving, optional

DIRECTIONS
In a blender, combine the wine and peaches. Puree until smooth.
If the mixture is too warm and liquefied, place it in the freezer and stir every 30 minutes until a perfect slushy texture forms.
You can make these in advance and defrost for 15 minutes at room temperature before serving. You can also double the recipe and use the entire bottle of wine to serve 4. The cups in the photo above hold about 1 cup of slushy.

Why Your Wine Bottle Is Shaped The Way It Is

Have you ever noticed that your wine bottle can come in a variety of shapes, sizes, heights and widths? While you might assume that the shape is related to some scientific fact that impacts the flavor of the wine - it actually isn't! The shape actually reflects history and tradition, and even where the wine was made! Here are a few interesting things to know about the shape of your wine bottle before coming out to drink the best wine at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Wine Bottle Shapes

There are hundreds of different bottle shapes but most winemakers will choose to go with one of these three: the Bordeaux bottle, the Burgundy bottle, and the Alsace/Mosel Bottle. Here are some interesting facts about how they came to be.

The Burgundy Bottle

Some say this bottle is shaped the way it is because it was easier for winemakers to make, other say that it captured the tannins better - either way, it's a very popular style. Like it's name implies, it was designed specifically for red and white Burgundies, as well as chardonnay and pinot noir. It was invented sometime in the nineteenth century, but it is still just as popular as it was then. In fact, you'll probably find a good red or white wine in this bottle.

The Bordeaux Bottle

After the creation of the burgundy bottle, the Bordeaux bottle began to pick up in popularity as well. You would commonly find cabernet sauvignon and merlot in a bottle like this bottle, and it immediately became the most used among winemakers around the world. The most distinctive feature of the Bordeaux bottle is the distinctive "shoulders" on the bottle. Many believe that the shoulders were created in order to catch the sediment that often accumulated in old Bordeaux  while the bottle was being decanted. Of course, this may not really be the case. It could have been merely a design choice to set the bottle apart from the others.

The Alsatian/Mosel Bottle

This third type of wine bottle was created shortly after the Bordeaux. It was made to store Riesling, both dry and sweet. You will now see it holding Gewurztraminer. These bottles are much more delicate than Burgundy and Bordeaux bottles, and many think that it could have been because of the transportation route for these wines was the Rhine river, which meant that you needed smaller river ships - hence a smaller more slender bottle. The transportation on the river may have also been more calm than the high seas, meaning a delicate bottle was acceptable.

Wedding Favors That Your Guests Will Love

Are you planning your winery wedding at the Lake of the Ozarks? There can be so many details that you didn't even know would need to be decided on, from colors to chair covers. Let's not even start talking about the wedding favors too! There are so many types to choose from, but in the end, you want something that will remind your guests of your special day, while still being practical. Whether it's something they can take home and eat or use, here are a few ways to decide what type of favor you would like to go with.

Choose Something Sentimental

Do you and your spouse-to-be have something special that maybe started your relationship or has been a staple in your relationship? Maybe you both drank rootbeer and mountain dew from glass bottles throughout the relationship, this would be a fun way to provide drinks for your guests, and also show them a piece of your relationship. Did your fiance propose to you using something unique, like a Taco Bell sauce packet? You could have one sitting at every place setting with a fun message!

Make it Edible

Guests always love something they can eat! Are you getting married in a unique location, like a Lake of the Ozarks Winery? You could give them something themed around grapes, like mini jars of jelly. If your heritage is important to you, you could feature a dessert from that country. Or, you could give everyone chocolate dipped spoons for their coffee or hot chocolate if you'll be getting married in the winter.

Double It Up

Maybe you want to accomplish two things at once? Make your favors and escort cards two in one! Candy, Christmas ornaments, or even cute pine cone fire starters are all cute ways to accomplish this. Even better, you could use mini bottles of wine with their name tied on a tag around the neck!

Give Back

If giving back to others is a huge part of your relationship, or even how you came together, this could make a unique wedding favor! You can put cards at each place setting saying how much you've given to a charity in their name. Look for the right organization or even pick a few!

Stick With Your Theme

One of the easiest ways to choose the right wedding favors is to think of your theme. If it's a rustic fall wedding, you can give candles, fall candy, or popcorn balls. If you're having a spring garden wedding, you can give pretty teacup candles, a bag of your favorite tea, or even seed packets.
