Fun Facts About Missouri Wine

Did you know that Missouri is home to over 125 wineries? Of course, we all know where to find the best wine at the Lake of the Ozarks! Missouri has played an important role in winemaking in the last hundred years, and the Show Me state is showing that it really loves wine. Here are a few interesting facts that you may or may not have known about Missouri wine.

Missouri Wins Top Awards at National and International Competitions

Year after year, Missouri is continually bringing home gold, double gold, best in class and other high-ranking awards from competitions around the world.

Missouri Has an Official State Grape

In 2003, the Norton grape became the official grape of Missouri. It is a Native American grape, and supposedly one of the oldest varieties still commercially grown. Norton is a big, dry red wine and is as unique as it is amazing. Our own Norton wine is an opaque deep plum color, with hints of tobacco and oak. It's full bodied, spicy and smooth with a persistent finish.

Missouri is home to the 1st Ever AVA

the American Viticulture Area (AVA) is a designated grape-growing region. In 1980, August was named the first ever AVA, because of it's unique soil, climate and wines, as well as the long history they have of being the oldest and foremost grape and wine district.

Missouri Saved the French Wine

Back in the 1870s, French wineries were dying due to a vineyard pest call Phylloxera. A Missouri Entomologist named C.V. Riley discovered American rootstock was resistant to this pest, and it was sent overseas and grafted into the French vines, thus helping rebuild their industry.

Missouri Makes a LOT of Wine

Over 900,000 gallons of wine are produced in Missouri alone, ever year! All of those bottled lined up would nearly span the widths of the state.

Prohibition Was Hard for Missouri Wines

Before the prohibition, Missouri was 2nd in the country in wine production, just behind New York. Now Missouri holds number 14th for American Wine Production.

Wine Trails

There are many wine trails in Missouri, and one of the best happens every year here at Seven Springs. In 2015, we started the first Annual Wine Trail Competition. All of the wineries get a chance to get together and compete for who has the best wine while you get the chance to TRY the best wine! It's a win-win for everyone.
