Common Wine Terms Explained

Have you ever visited the best winery at the Lake of the Ozarks, and heard people uttering a slew of words that all sounded like Greek? Well, it's not Greek, just fancy terms that winos use to describe their favorite beverage. Once you know these super simple terminologies, you can join in the conversation and sound like a wine connoisseur in no time!

Wine Terminology

Acidity

This term will describe how tart a wine is (or isn't). You may also hear other similar words such as crisp and bright or flabby.

Vintage

Just because a wine is described as vintage doesn't mean that it's old. It can also mean that the wine was made from grapes that were all (or mostly) harvested in a single year. A non-vintage wine is, obviously, grapes that were harvested over two or more years.

Body

This word describes how heavy or full wine feels in your mouth. The body of a wine can be light, medium or full-bodied.

Jammy

This term is used to describe red wines with a cooked fruit flavor

Tannins

There are bitter compounds in the skin and seeds of grapes that give red wine structure. (White wines have little to no tannins as they're typically not fermented on the skins.) You will typically desire some tannins in the flavor of the wine, but generally overly tannic wines can cause a drying sensation in your mouth.

Terrior

Terrior refers to how a growing region affects the wine's flavor. It's mostly used to describe wine, but it can also apply to cheese, coffee beans and other foods.

Now you can discuss wine with the best of them! Hopefully these terms can also help you appreciate wine as well. The flavors and textures of wine are intriguing and distinct. If you don't have a good feel for wine flavors and types - you're in luck! We offer wonderful wine tasting at the Lake of the Ozarks! For just a few dollars you can come in and try ALL of our wines, and get a souvenir glass! If you just want to try a few wines to wet your palate you can try three free. 7 Basics to Storing Seven Springs Wine

There is a certain sense of sophistication in knowing that you have some of the best wine at the Lake of the Ozarks, stored in your home wine collection. Though wine will always taste better here at our winery, there are a few things to remember when storing your wine at home in order to keep it fresh, and amazing. Here are seven tips to storing your wine at home.

Keep it Cool

Nothing will ruin your wine faster than heat. Anything higher than 70° will age your wine more quickly than is generally desirable. If your storage gets much warmer than that, your wine may end up "cooked", which will cause flat aromas and flavors. It's been said that the ideal temps range between 45° F and 65° F, and though there isn't an exact science, it is said that 55° is the perfect temperature. Luckily it's not life or death to your wine if the temperature fluctuates a bit, as long as you're opening the bottles within a few years from the release.

But Not Too Cool

While you don't want your wine to get too warm, you certainly don't want it to get too cold. You can keep your wine in the fridge for short term, but the average refrigerator drops below 45° to keep your food from perishing. Your fridge also lacks moisture which could dry the cork out, allowing air to seep in and hurt your wine. Also make sure to not store your wine where it will freeze - such as your garage in the winter, or forgotten in the freezer. If the liquid starts to freeze it will expand and could push the cork out!

Consistency is Key

You don't need to be paranoid about the temperature staying at the perfect 55°, as much as you need to worry about the consistency of the temperature. Constant fluctuations can cause the cork to expand or contract which could allow seepage. Though just because there is wine that has seeped out past the cork doesn't mean it's ruined - the only way to know is to try it!

Darkness Is Ideal

Ever wondered why wine was stored in dark or colored glass bottles? It's like sunglasses for you wine! UV rays can degrade and age your wine, and household bulbs can fade your labels in the long run. Incandescent bulbs are found to be the safest bet.

Keep It On It's Side

Generally wine is stored on it's side because it keeps the cork from drying out. If you're planning on drinking your wine in the near future, it probably won't affect it as much. Though it is much more space efficient to store your bottles horizontally instead of vertically.

No Shaking

There is a lot of debate about the damage that vibrations can cause to your wine. Some say that it speeds up the chemical reactions in the liquid, and other serious collectors think that even subtle vibrations cause from electronics can affect your wine. There is little evidence for this - so carrying your wine to your car, and to your fridge, and back to your couch is not going to hurt it.

Reasons to Get Married in the Fall

Fall is a beautiful time of year to celebrate your wedding. Beautiful colors, textures, and flavors make this time of year absolutely endearing. Of course, a wedding venue at the Lake of the Ozarks is even more beautiful because of the combination of rolling hills, the beautiful colors, and wonderful location. You'll have everything you need for a successful day! Here are five reasons why we think Fall weddings are amazing.

Because You Get These Cakes...

The Fall season isn't just about the cozy warm colors. The flavors of Fall are delectable. Combinations of pumpkin, caramel, cinnamon and apples are amazingly delicious. You can even get creative an add splashes of citrus to the icing and fillings. Another benefit of this season is that you can use buttercream and softer icings that would normally melt during the hot summer.

Because You Can Take These Photos...

The backdrop of bright orange, red and gold leaves will be stunning in your wedding shots - and even better yet? Getting to have our beautiful vineyard at the Lake of the Ozarks in your photos as well! There's always something romantic about the way the leaves change every Fall. The way they flutter down from their trees, and the way they blanket the ground in colors. So why not get married in the season where you can maximize that beauty?

Because You Can Carry These Bouquets...

We've already established that the Fall colors are perfection, but even better is that those same colors go well with so many other colors! From rich purples to chocolate browns, and even magnificent blues you can incorporate many different colors into your palette. There are no limitations to the wonderful combinations you can incorporate into your bouquet. Another fun thing to add to your flowers is fruit! Grapes and apples are incredibly unique when buried into a beautiful floral arrangement. They add unique color schemes, textures, shapes, and even scents. Get creative when planning a Fall wedding at the Lake of the Ozarks, let the season inspire beauty in the details.

Because You Can Wear Warm, Cozy Accessories...

The Autumn season is notorious for allowing you to incorporate warm sweaters, leggings, boots and scarfs. Why not include your favorite accessories in your wedding? Make your special day personal with the accessories you love. From your favorite stylish jacket, to your trendy boots, you can incorporate those details, making it all the more special.

Because You Can Decorate Like This...

Fall decor for your home is gorgeous, but imagine decor for wedding? It's breathtaking! These fun examples are an amazing way to incorporate the colors of Fall into your special day. From hanging flowers down the aisle, scattering leaves instead of flowers, and even using the natural outdoor beauty, you can't go wrong with this season. You can also decorate the reception tables in this beautifully festive fashion. From centerpieces with pumpkins, leaves and cinnamon candles, to huge arbors draping around your venue - the ideas are endless. Let your creativity run away with you!
