The Difference Between a Norton & a Cabernet

Red wine is a type of wine made from dark-colored grape varieties. The actual color of the wine can vary from intense violet to a brick red or even a brownish color depending on the age. There are hundreds of varieties of red wine grapes and each produces a different flavor profile. Two of the most popular red wines you'll find here in Missouri are Cabernet and Norton. So what exactly is the difference between the two? Seven Springs Winery has the scoop!

Cabernet

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world's most widely recognized red wine grape varieties. It is grown worldwide in nearly every wine producing country. The popularity is often attributed to its ease of cultivation. The grapes have thick skins and the vines are rot and frost resistant. Cabernet Franc is one of the major black grape varieties, also worldwide. It is principally grown for use in Bordeaux style blends, but is also made into a stand-alone wine. DNA analysis places Cabernet Franc as one of the parents, along with Sauvignon Blanc, of Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc is lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon and contributes finesse and a peppery aroma when blended with more robust grapes. Depending on the growing region and style of wine, additional aromas can include tobacco, raspberry, bell pepper, cassis and sometimes even violets.

Norton

Norton is a grape believed to be largely derived from Vitis Aestivalis. It is grown in the Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic United States, as well as northeastern Georgia. The Norton grape variety maintains high levels of malic acid and phenolic acids in the ripening berries when compared to those of Cabernet Sauvignon. Furthermore, Norton berries develop a remarkably high level of resistance to most fungal pathogens, while Cabernet Sauvignon berries remain susceptible to those pathogens. Norton grapes produce a rich, full-bodied red wine. It shows both red and black fruits on the nose and palate and a unique, but intriguing flavor profile. You'll find it soft on first taste, but firming up with a good core of acidity in the finish. The Norton is the official grape of the State of Missouri and is a favorite among visitors of our Lake of the Ozarks winery.

Stop by and try a glass of Seven Springs Winery Norton today! Our winery at the Lake of the Ozarks is open from 11 AM - 7 PM and offers wine tasting daily. The winery sits atop 160 acres of rolling Missouri foothills between Camdenton and Osage Beach, and is just a 10 minute drive from either location. Eat, drink and be merry at Seven Springs Winery!

Celebrate National Drink Wine Day!

Today, February 18, 2015, is National Drink Wine Day! In honor of this awesome holiday, Seven Springs Winery wanted to share with you some of the great things about wine. Some studies have shown that wine actually does have some health benefits. Here are 8 benefits of wine from FoodandWine.com:

8 Benefits of Drinking Wine

While wine does have many health benefits, they come from moderate wine drinking. The American Heart Association defines moderate wine consumption as one to two 4 oz. glasses a day.

1. Promotes Longevity.

A Finnish study of 2,468 men over a 29-year period showed that wine drinkers have a 34% lower mortality rate than beer or spirits drinkers. Researchers from Harvard Medical School also report that red wine has anti-aging properties. Resveratrol is a beneficial compound that comes from the skin of red grapes.

2. Reduces Risk of Hear Attach and Heart Disease.

A 16-year Harvard School of Public Health study of 11,711 men showed that moderate drinkers suffering from high blood pressure are 30% less likely to have a heart attack than nondrinkers. A study at Queen Mary University in London showed red-wine tannins contain procyanidins, which protect against heart disease. Antioxidants in red wine may help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein and protecting against artery damage. Procyanidins keep the blood vessels healthy.

3. Reduces Risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

According to research on 369,862 individuals studied over an average of 12 years each, moderate drinkers have 30% less risk than nondrinkers of developing type 2 diabetes. In an animal study conducted by scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered that resveratrol improved sensitivity to insulin. Insulin resistance is the most important critical factor contributing to type 2 diabetes risk.

4. Lowers Risk of Stroke.

A Columbia University study of 3,176 individuals over an 8 year period showed that the possibility of suffering a blood clot-related stroke drops by about 50% in people who consume moderate amounts of alcohol. According to researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, red wine also may protect the brain from stroke damage. The reseratrol in red wine raises levels of heme oxygenase, an enzyme known to protect nerve cells in the brain from damage. When somebody suffers a stroke, the brain is ready to protect itself because of higher enzyme levels.

5. Cuts Risk of Cataracts.

A study of 1,379 individuals in Iceland showed that moderate drinkers are 32% less likely to get cataracts than nondrinkers. Those who consume wine are 43% less likely to develop cataracts than those drinking mainly beer. According to researchers at Washington University School of Medicine reported that red wine can stop the out-of-control blood vessel growth in the eye that causes blindness.

6. Cuts Risk of Colon Cancer.

A Stony Brook University study of 2,291 individuals over a 4 year period showed that moderate consumption of wine (especially red) cuts the risk of colon cancer by 45%. According the scientists from the University of Leicester, UK, moderate red wine consumption can reduce the rate of bowel tumors by approximately 50%.

7. Slows Brain Decline.

A Columbia University study of 1,416 people showed that brain function declines at a markedly faster rate in nondrinkers than in moderate drinkers. Several studies have observed that drinking low-to-moderate amounts of alcohol, particularly red wine, may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Other studies suggest that red wine has the highest potential to prevent or delay cognitive decline.

Come celebrate National Drink Wine Day at our Lake of the Ozarks winery! Seven Springs Winery and Vineyards sits atop 160 acres of rolling Missouri foothills between Camdenton and Osage Beach. The winery is less than a 10 minute drive from either location. We offer wine tastings daily, so come on by and get yourself a glass of red wine!

7 Wine Tips You Should Know for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is tomorrow! Couples all over will be celebrating with a romantic dinner and nothing says romance better than candle light and glass of your favorite Lake of the Ozarks wine. From how to properly pop the cork to removing an accidental wine stain, these tips from MaineBeerandWine.com could come in handy this Valentine's Day!

1. Popping the Cork.

Just like with any relationship, getting off to a good start always helps. To open a bottle of wine, cut the foil all the way around the rim of the bottle and remove it. If you're using a waiter's corkscrew, penetrate the cork slightly off center so that the "worm" of the corkscrew will feed into the center. If you're using a double-clutch corkscrew, use the first stop to loosen the cork about halfway and then use the longer stop to pry it completely out.

2. Mastering the Pour.

If you're looking to impress that special someone, you'll want to properly pour the wine into their glass for them. When you start to pour, try not to clang the neck of the bottle with the edge of the glass. When you're finished pouring, slightly twist the bottle upward to keep it from dripping.

3. Removing a Stain.

You want the night to be perfect, but sometimes nerves can get the best of us. If you happen to spill some wine, it's important you know how to save yourself and your clothes. Try blotting the spill with a paper towel and then immerse it in soda water. Blot it again and apply a baking soda paste. You could also consider using a product like Wineaway.

4. Using the Correct Wine Glass.

Scientific studies have been conducted and there is a method behind the madness of different types of wine glasses. If you're serving a red wine, the glass should be generally larger and have a bigger bowl. If you're serving wine, you'll want a narrower, taller glass. Some companies even make glasses specific to the type of grape used in the wine, but you don't need to get that fancy tomorrow.

5. Pairing Wine with Chocolate.

Seven Springs Syrah will pair perfectly with chocolates because of it's richness of currant and blackberry flavors. The dense, textured mouth-feel can't be beat with chocolate. Stop by our winery at the Lake of the Ozarks and pick up a bottle for tomorrow!

6. Storing Wine.

One of the most important things to remember when storing wine is the temperature of the environment in which you will be storing it. The basic rule of thumb is about 50 degrees. Equally important is the serving temperature of the wine. American's typically consume white wines too cold and warm wines too warm, which has a major impact on the flavor. Based on a starting point of 50 degrees, you should refrigerate white wine 3 to 4 hours before serving. For red wines, you should remove the bottle from the storage area about 20 minutes before serving.

7. Increasing Desire.

As with any type of alcohol, wine has been known to increase a persons sexual desire. Wine has been used used for centuries as a natural aphrodisiac. In particular, red wine is rich in an antioxidant which increases estrogen production. In general, wine helps people relax and stimulates their senses. Seven Springs Winery has several different red wines for you to choose from for this romantic holiday.

Seven Springs Winery wishes you a very Happy Valentine's Day! Whether you choose to stay in with a bottle of wine or go out to celebrate, our Lake of the Ozarks winery has you covered. Stop by to pick up your bottle of wine today or give us a call 573-317-0100 to make reservations for our Valentine's Day dinner!
