How Long is Too Long - The Fridge Life of Your Wine

When you are accustomed to enjoying your wine at the best winery at the Lake of the Ozarks, you are guaranteeing yourself a fresh glass of wine. We go through so many bottles, that there won't be time for it to even go bad, but what are you supposed to do when you take your bottle back to the comfort of your own home? Here are a few tips to tell if your wine is good, bad or sparkling.

The Look

When a wine has been left open for too long, the oxidation will cause the wine to be past it's peak. Oxygen is not your friend when it comes to your favorite bottle of Missouri wine. There are ways to help make the process a little slower, but at some point, all wine lovers will face a bad bottle. The first thing to notice will be the look. If your wine has a cloudy appearance, or leaves a film in the bottle, that could be a sign that your wine is past the point of not return. When your red wine turns to brown, that could be a sign that your wine is not good anymore. If you find tiny bubbles in your wine, then that could mean your wine has gone through a second fermentation, which gives you a form of "sparkling wine".

The Smell

A wine that has gone bad with have a scent similar to nail polish remover, vinegar, or paint thinner. These aromas are caused from chemical reactions from the wine being exposed to air and heat. This causes bacteria to grow that produces acetic acid and acetaldehyde.

The Taste

A wine that's gone bad won't hurt you, but it's probably not a good idea to drink it. It will have a flavor similar to vinegar and may burn your nasal passages. Sometimes it might even have a caramelized flavor.
